Curriculum Design and Distribution

Hugh Sexey Church of England Middle School serves upper key stage two and key stage three children and aligns its provision with the 2014 National Curriculum. The three-tiered system, of which Hugh Sexey is central, prides itself on; its unique transition points, its ability to track and monitor pupils across multiple key stages and its skilful capacity to rapidly progress pupils’ educational attainment in preparation for KS4.

Year 5 and 6 pupils’ experience a strong welcome at Hugh Sexey Church of England Middle School. Its broad curriculum differs from that of a traditional primary model and a well-considered, scheduled blend of both year and subject specialists present our pupils with challenge, depth and richness across its content. In years 5 and 6, the distribution of curricula time embeds the core skills whilst simultaneously supporting and developing pupils in both a pastoral and academic capacity.

Year 7 and 8 pupils’ experience a secondary approach to curricular distribution. All lessons are taught in tailored rooms with subject specialist teachers. The distribution at key stage three is balanced and weighted to stretch pupils in a broad and dynamic capacity. The curriculum aims to deepen pupils understanding of their prior learning, scaffold and promote the application of new skills and instil a resilient mindset to new academic approaches. A pupil’s journey, across the key stages, develop and prepare the whole child, through a well-planned and proportioned pastoral and academic alignment.

Our curriculum promotes equality and has an inclusive philosophy. The school adopts a wide range of teaching and learning styles to cater for the needs of all children and additional provision is available to those who require support. Pupils’ are well monitored throughout their learning journey and early intervention strategies are adopted where appropriate through a variety of mediums.

We have high expectations of our pupils. Challenge and stretch are instilled at all ability levels to encourage creativity, curiosity and independent thinking. Pupils’ are encouraged to problem solve, reflect and adopt a ‘can do’ positive attitude. Pupils’ take ownership of their learning, take pride in their work and are able to confidently articulate the academic and pastoral expectations of the school.
