Communication skills

Pupils who continue their language learning journey at Hugh Sexey Church of England Middle School will be provided with a solid foundation in the 4 core skills:

– Reading                                – Listening                             – Speaking                             – Writing

They will be able to build upon these skills as they move on to GCSE and also to support any future language learning.

In light of the requirements of the new GCSE specification we will ensure that our learners are fully prepared in the additional skills of:

– Dictation                             – Translation                          – Reading aloud

Self-confidence

As well as building up the core skills required to learn a language, the curriculum also aims to build pupils’ confidence, especially in thinking about how to clearly and effectively communicate with others.  Pupils will have to learn to spontaneously think on their feet whilst solving problems and finding solutions, both in their native language and in French, as well as having the confidence to do so through repeated practice.

Cultural awareness

We also aim to broaden the cultural horizons of our pupils, by showing them the diversity of the French-speaking world in all corners of the globe.  The curriculum will help pupils to envisage their place in a global context and reinforce the cultural and communicative benefits of learning a foreign language, despite globalisation and the spread of the English language.  This will enable our pupils to see where languages can take them.
